Energy Storage Device It is a device that uses a certain substance to store energy. It has the functions of energy storage and energy release. According to different energy storage methods, energy storage devices can be divided into the following types:
1. Capacitive energy storage device: Uses an electric field to store electrical energy, including capacitors, etc. Capacitive energy storage systems can be quickly charged and discharged, with high power density, but low energy density.
2. Battery energy storage device: Uses chemical reactions to store electrical energy, including lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries, etc. Battery energy storage systems have high energy density but low power density, and the charging and discharging speed is slow.
3. Mechanical energy storage device: Uses the potential energy of suspended objects, the potential energy of elastic deformation, or the kinetic energy of rotating flywheels to store mechanical energy, including cranes, springs, flywheels, etc. Mechanical energy storage systems have large capacity but low energy conversion efficiency.
4. Hydrogen energy storage device: Uses compressed or liquefied hydrogen to store chemical energy, including high-pressure hydrogen tanks and liquid hydrogen tanks. Hydrogen energy storage systems are small in size and light in weight, but hydrogen is easily explosive and liquid hydrogen requires extremely low temperatures.
5. Thermal energy storage device: Uses material phase change to absorb or release heat to store thermal energy, including graphite thermal storage devices. Thermal energy storage systems can store heat for a long time, but the volume and cost are relatively large.
The structure of an energy storage device mainly includes two parts: energy storage components and energy storage medium
The energy storage component is the main structure of the energy storage device, used to store and fix the energy storage medium. Common energy storage components include:
1. Capacitor: The electric field between two conductive plates is used to store charge.
2. Battery: Uses the chemical reaction between two electrodes and an electrolyte to store charge.
3. High-pressure gas storage tank: Used to store high-pressure or liquefied gas.
4. Flywheel: A rotating object whose center of gravity is far from the axis of rotation, and its kinetic energy is used to store mechanical energy.
5. Spring: Stores the force acting on the spring as potential energy.
The energy storage medium is the real carrier of energy storage and release in the energy storage device. Common energy storage media include:
1. Electric charge: Stored between two conductive plates in a capacitor.
2. Chemical substances: Store chemical energy through redox reactions in batteries.
3. Gas: Stored as compressed gas or liquid in a high-pressure gas storage tank.
4. Kinetic energy and potential energy: Stored in the form of kinetic energy and potential energy in mechanical energy storage devices.
5. Heat: Stored when absorbing heat and released when releasing heat in the phase change material of the thermal energy storage device.
Energy storage devices mainly include capacitive energy storage devices, battery energy storage devices, mechanical energy storage devices, hydrogen energy storage devices, and thermal energy storage devices, and are widely used in power generation systems, transportation tools, and backup power supplies for communication equipment, etc.
